Since the last blog post, I've been busy fabricating two new necks. The steps are summarized as follows:
- resaw mahogany neck blanks
- cut scarf joint (15 degees) to form the headstock
- glue neck blank headstock and heel together
- rough shape neck and drill holes for bolt attachment
- glue book matched rosewood veneer to headstock and shape
- cut new fretboards, add abalone position markers and install new frets, level and polish
- glue fretboard to neck at the 14th fret
- shape final neck configuration
- drill holes for tuners
- sand neck with 100, 120, 180 & 220 grit sandpaper
- spray four coats of shellac to seal wood and to provide a base for "French polishing" of the necks
